Diamonds: Women’s Best Friend
11.16.04 (12:01 am)   [edit]
Diamonds: Women’s Best Friend

Diamonds are women’s best friends is an oft repeated cliché. According to estimates, millions of women adorn themselves with diamond rings, pendants, necklaces, chokers etc. Diamond ring was used to court women by men in Hollywood films. These actually gave a fillip to diamond jewelry. It has been in vogue ever since. Fashion shows, movie award functions and other society dos are incomplete without women flaunting their diamond ornaments in their favorite colors.

Women are not size conscious when it comes to choosing diamonds. In fact, they look for the dazzle, color, cut and so on. Though some gemstones like ruby are more expensive than diamonds, they do not command the awe that diamonds do for women. Women buy diamond more for their ornamental value than as a form of investment. An ideal diamond is one that would be free from color additions, blemishes and is perfectly proportioned. These can be figured when they are scrutinized with 10X loupe.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certifies diamonds after going through the four C’s clarity cut, color, and carat weight. Roughly 80% of world’s diamonds are polished in Antwerp in Belgium.

Some more insight to Diamonds

Diamond is essentially a mineral, which is in fact a transparent form of pure carbon. It is considered to be the hardest mineral in existence. It originated in Earth's crust, and thanks to volcanoes, they appeared on the surface. Diamonds are supposed to have been formed three billion years ago!

Most of the diamonds now are being used for industrial purposes. Because of its hardness, it is used to grind and cut the hardest of substances. Metals, ceramics, concrete are some of the things which are shaped using diamonds. Diamonds come in a different colors like blue, yellow, orange, red etc. among other things, diamond is considered to be a good conductor of heat. That is the reason, they are used in manufacturing semiconducting materials. Of course, diamond is the jewellery of the glitterati. A diamond’s valuation is based on four factors namely clarity, cut carat and color. Of these, cut is the most important factor, as more radiance they emit the more appealing they look.

According to Greek mythology, diamonds were supposed to be the tears of gods, while Indians believed them to be the gifts of gods. De Beers Company is instrumental in promoting diamonds as prized possessions. They advertised them through movies and direct campaigns. The most sought after shape in diamond is round. Other popular shapes are heart, oval, pear, round etc. Diamond settings are also important when people select them. Prong setting is the most popular of all. The other settings are bar, bezel, channel, pave, Chevron etc.

The color of diamonds varies from colorless to shades of yellow. Ideally diamonds should have no color. The colorless diamonds are of highest quality. The colors of diamonds are measured on a scale which ranges from D to Z. D signifies the diamond has no color. Z shows that diamond have deep colors. Beyond Z the diamonds fall into fancy categories. Colorimeter is a machine which is used to grade the diamonds color.

The calor grading scale was first developed by Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The colored diamonds are very limited in number so they have a rare supply. Some of the diamond colors like intense purplish pink one of the most rare colored diamonds could cost more then $100,000. Generally colors between D and L are most rare and expensive. Diamonds having yellow tints are camparatively cheaper.

Carat weight: one of the 4 c's of diamond.
11.09.04 (9:40 am)   [edit]
The weight of diamonds is measured in terms of carats. Infact carat is the unit for weight of all the gemstones. Larger the diamond more the value of it. A large diamond of 2 carats is of higher value then 2 diamonds of 1 carat each. One carat is equal to 100 points. So if a diamond is having 50 points means it is equal to 1/2 carat. Gram is equal to 5 carats.

The word carat is coined from carob seed which are small and consistent in weight. Carab seeds were used for measuring diamond weight in India in ancient times where the diamonds were first discovered and traded. In modern times too the carat is nearly equivalent to one carab bean

How diamonds are formed ? Basics of diamonds
11.09.04 (9:22 am)   [edit]
Diamond is pure form of carbon in its most concentrated form. Diamonds are generally excavated from deep in the earth. The diamonds are formed 100 miles below the earth surface by very high heat and pressure which transforms carbon into diamonds. For the formation of diamonds the carbon should be exposed to a heat of 400 degrees celcius and a pressure of 30 kilobars.

There are 2 types of deposits for diamonds on earth. Primary deposits and secondry deposits. Primary diamonds are generally kimberlite or lamproite which remain inside the rocks deep in the earth and is extracted by mining. Secondry type of diamonds are those which erodes from the rock and are present in the form of marine diamond deposits. Primary diamonds are of more importance then the secondry diamonds.

The diamonds we see today might be formed billions of years before. So next time you wear one think of the carbon billion of years ago which transformed into diamond and came to you via your loved one in the form of diamond ring or .....
